Why staying on top of your servicing matters
It's easy to put off — until a small, cheap fix turns into a big, expensive one. Here's what regular servicing actually buys you.
Keeps you safe
Brakes, tyres and steering get checked by someone who knows exactly what to look for — before they become a problem on the road.
Catches small problems early
A worn belt or a slow leak is a cheap fix today — and a roadside recovery call-out or replacement engine if it's left to fail on its own.
Protects its value
A full, honest service history reassures buyers and can mean a noticeably better trade-in or resale price when the time comes.
Keeps warranties happy
Many warranties and finance agreements require proof of regular servicing — we'll stamp the book or email you a receipt either way.
Official MOT Testing Station
Class 4, 7 & motorhome MOTs with our qualified testers. We give you straight, honest results — and we'll never pressure you into fixing something that doesn't need it.
When's your MOT due?
Pop your reg into the free GOV.UK checker to see your expiry date. Due in the next month? Book now: testing early keeps the same renewal date.
Good to know
Your MOT, decoded
A few straight answers on what's changing, what's a myth, and what's just useful to know before your next test.
What's new
We may take a photo of your car
DVSA is phasing in a rule letting testers photograph your car in the bay, number plate visible, to help stamp out "ghost MOTs" — passes issued for cars never actually tested.
Buying a used car? Check first
You can look up any car's full MOT history free on GOV.UK before you hand over any money — past failures and advisories tell you a lot.
Electric & hybrid cars
No extra test items for EVs or hybrids — same safety checks as any other car, just without the emissions test.
Bigger electric vans
Zero-emission vans between 3.5 and 4.25 tonnes now take a Class 7 MOT, same as their diesel equivalents — and yes, we test Class 7.
Myth busters
"The first MOT is moving to 4 years"
It isn't. Your first test is still due three years after registration, then every year after that.
"An advisory means I've failed"
No — only 'major' and 'dangerous' defects fail the test. A 'minor' should be sorted soon, but the car still passes.
"The brake warning light is an automatic fail"
The light alone isn't a reason to fail — but pads worn down to the wear indicator are a major defect, and below 1.5mm it's dangerous.
Handy to know
Book up to a month early
You can test up to a month (minus a day) before your MOT runs out, and keep the same renewal date.
Never miss it
GOV.UK sends free text or email reminders before your MOT is due — worth signing up for.
MOT run out?
You can still legally drive to a pre-booked test, or to a garage for repairs — nowhere else.
The cost of forgetting — and the price cap
Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000. The maximum fee for a car MOT is set by government at £54.85, a cap that's gone largely unchanged for years.
Don't ignore that tyre pressure light
A faulty tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has counted as a major defect on the MOT since 2015 — meaning a flashing or persistent warning light can fail your car even if the tyres themselves are fine. DVSA has spent 2026 tightening up the official guidance testers use to judge TPMS faults, so it's being watched more closely than ever. If that light's been on for a while, get it checked before test day rather than after.
General guidance, correct to the best of our knowledge at time of writing — always confirm current MOT requirements at gov.uk.
